Palmex: the permanent roofing solution

Discover Palms

Building the roof of tomorrow in the tradition of the past…

Palm roofs speak of a time when that type of roof was man’s vital shield against the harshness of nature, which it still is in many parts of the world. The benefits of palms have been appreciated universally throughout history and are key to its recent forceful comeback. Palmex International has contributed to the development of the palm industry by producing quality synthetic palms, but also by supporting the protection of our environment.

Palm Roofs back then and now…

Palms are one of the oldest building and roofing materials known to men. Some trace palm roofs at the very beginning of human history and over several continents. Recognized and appreciated for its many qualities, the palm has not only survived industrialization, modern farming methods and environmental regulations, but even established itself as a sound roofing alternative.

It used to be that a palm roof was the sign and symbol of a homey yet most humble abode. More recently, informed and eco-responsible consumers have turned to new and renewable materials. Thus, the shift to modern palm roof was in part triggered by the availability on the market of artificial palms by the late 20th century. Nowadays, in industrialized countries, palm roofing has become the signature of a quality and eco-responsible lifestyle.

Palms in the modern way…

It is less the installation of a palm roof than the palm itself that has changed, though both have evolved. Building a synthetic palm roof is much simpler and faster than building a traditional one. The first requires minimum training, if any, while the second calls for skilled craftsmanship. Synthetic palm roofing is also maintenance-free, easier to repair and more cost-effective, especially in the long run. Artificial palms being considerably lighter than natural thatch, less timber is generally needed for the supporting structure. However, both types are appreciated for their versatility and flexibility as they imply no restrictions of roof dimensions or shapes. Both natural and artificial palms also have excellent phonic and thermal insulating and regulating characteristics but a natural palm roof requires steeper pitches, regular skilled maintenance and will not last very long if not both skillfully laid and maintained.

Palm roofs around the world…

In freezing cold and tropical climates alike, palm roofs are used on all kinds of structures. From simple shelters or impressive mansions to most unusual modern-day facilities, a palm roof is synonymous with protection, comfort and pleasure, but also of convenience, cost-effectiveness and efficiency.

Just about every civilization and region of the globe has brought its unique material, touch and palm roof techniques: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, the Pacific Islands, Oceania … If palm is today the expression of an ethnic style, it is above all that of an alternative lifestyle and of an exotic atmosphere, or on the contrary, of tradition.
